Police deny bungling body in boot case

Police say a young man has died after officers failed to check the boot that a driver found at his car as he entered a local hotel.

A hotel worker told investigators that he found the white, unlaid, black and blue boot after he came across the man's car. He told officers it looked like a boot print at first, then, as more and more police officers were near, he said, the boot looked like another print.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mark Horsfall said the victim was found on Sunday night at the Westgate Resort at 11:20 p.m., but a funeral has not yet been scheduled.

One guest found the black and white boot at the door of the hotel, police say. He told investigators that he and another guest found the man when they were leaving from the lobby. The man had a gun tucked under his arm when he was arrested by local authorities.

Detectives also learned about the man's body found on Sunday night in the boot of the white luxury vehicle, police said.

Horsfall said investigators were looking into a connection between the man's death and two other people found by hotel staff at different points of time. Both died in that search.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:22 p.m., police said.

Cops find man's body of unknown age at Westgate

One guest in the hotel said he saw a police officer with a red gun after he came to find the car parked.

He told investigators police had already been dispatched to the scene and called the victim's name. The victim, in his 20s, told investigators his name was Christopher Lee and he was an Army reservist.

"He said he was just looking around and thought there must have been police," Horsfall said. "When he got back to the hotel he didn't see anything. The officer told him to come over. The door was open and this guy was there."

Horsfall described the man as being white, 6 feet 2 inches tall, about 225 pounds, of short, brown hair, and in his mid-30s.

"This young man didn't look like the type we've seen around here," Horsfall said.

The hotel manager described the man as being "cool." The witness did not return calls seeking comment Sunday night.

The victim was found by a couple of people at their vehicle parked inside the hotel around midnight. When their vehicle was parked nearby, another vehicle pulled up, and they were struck in the boot of the white car as well, Horsfall said.

The car was covered with a pad of paper with the words "Wha

Drop in tas house prices expected at $1bn per home, according to industry projections".

"The new housing market continues to struggle with affordability and demand. Over the past 12 months in Sydney, we've seen a 30 per cent year-on-year decline in new home sales, an over 30 per cent increase in the number of dwellings purchased and a 25 per cent increase in the number of detached units that have been sold."

A recent report published by Credit Suisse suggests the national housing market is facing a "severe undersupply" with the average house price in the region reaching $1,073,300.

The report said there are a number of factors contributing to the shortage in new building which are likely to contribute to household debt and higher home prices.

However, while house prices will remain high for the foreseeable future, they should not exceed the level of the late 1990s, the report said.

"House prices are expected to stabilize in the near term as construction and supply continue to drive the market, with modest further increases in interest rates expected before the end of the decade."

With house prices likely to continue rising at a slower rate than demand, this means Sydney's household debt is also likely to stay high because housing supply will be limited.

The housing economist at Bankwest warned that while the national economy is expected to improve over the next year or so as the economic climate improves the housing supply is set to remain in a "steady stream".

"However, the housing market is in danger of becoming a drag on the local economy and not allowing the Federal Government to manage its public finances through the budget by maintaining strong housing construction policies."

"In fact, the strong pace at which the household debt load in the economy is increasing means that the local economy is in for a major downturn with many households having to borrow at the highest rates."

He said the government's record on housing is a problem.

"In the past two years the Government has spent less than $30 billion on housing policy, less than half that of any other significant government expenditure in the country."

The analyst called for a change in policy.

"In our view, the Government's focus on the housing

Pickett claims norm smith medalist, who was on the verge of being a world champ on his debut, could still be in the fold.

"What that would mean for my confidence as a competitive jiu-jitsu black belt is that my next opponent's first opponent will probably be in the top three and then I'm not sure if it would matter since I'm not going to be there for another year. But, yeah," he said.

"My next fight will probably be a black belt contender, but I'll probably be there for another year, hopefully it'll be in my home region."

That was until the news the winner of this year's UFJJW National Championship was, and remains, going to compete in Brazil.

To get back the belts in question, he has two options - either compete in the UFJJW National Championship at the end of September, or hold an interim title tournament and try to defend it.

"I'm definitely going to hold a tournament. It might be more of an interim tournament in my case," he said.

If his tournament is successful, there are also two potential opportunities that come with it - the top two in the tournament, and then two titles being awarded to the winning men from all the remaining local events in Brazil.

In the interim he could make this a two-man tournament, with only the winner and runner-up.

With four men in the main event on this year's card, you may wonder whether that's going to change.

"My coach and I have spoken about the possibility that it may," he said. "The idea was to try to make the team if you have eight, nine, ten people in the main event who should compete with the eight men. I'd rather put the best young prospect in the team, but if it does become a two-man event it doesn't mean I won't compete in it.

"Maybe I go in and say, 'Hey I'm going to compete' then if it works out I can go in and say, 'Hey I'm going to compete in it', but I think it'll be in an intermediate tournament or something like that, and I think people will be very impressed."

If the idea doesn't work out, maybe you can say it's an alternative - but he won't.

"You're looking at an intermediate or intermediate gold medal in my eyes," he said. "And then to be part of the United States at UFJJW National Championship, but not be able to compete. That's the most disappointing thing.

"For me, it's a bigger disappointment that I don't have the opportunity to be one of the last eigh

Hal vote sets research body on a sustainable platform

Monday, August 7, 2012 - 12:47PM

By James O'Sullivan, News Staff Reporter

The American Chemical Society held the first in a series of meetings with researchers to identify research areas ripe for commercialization in the next year.

The meetings featured a roundtable of industry and government leaders to review existing research projects and plan what needs to be done to expand chemical manufacturing.

"Manufacturers are asking for our help because they know that our regulatory system is falling short and the opportunities exist to improve that," said Tom Hebert, the group's president.

According to recent national statistics, the number of chemists has remained flat while the research community has grown.

Hebert noted that companies can now be more efficient while developing products for new markets.

Currently, there are more than 70,000 chemists practicing at about 5,800 U.S. businesses.

Hebert said those statistics will change in the coming years, as chemists want more and more market access and opportunities for innovation.

For example, one of the industry trends he wants to address is what the average age is for chemists. Companies that create products for the consumer would like to offer chemists 25 years of education.

"With the rising population and increasing productivity that's going to come through it, that's something that we're going to need to consider in creating products for consumers," he said.

Hebert also pointed to the increase in the global market for food.

The food market is estimated to grow to more than $1 trillion this year, with a current market share of about 15 percent, according to the International Food Information Council.

Hebert cited increased availability of food as a potential driver for economic growth.

Currently, 80 percent of the world's food comes from developing countries, but in the future food producers are going to have to use sustainable resources if they're going to meet growing demand.

"We need to have a level playing field so if the global population comes down, we're going to be able to feed everyone," Hebert said.

Hebert said the recent national polls that indicated Ameri
